An MRI scan may be used to identify the following:
An MRI scan has the advantage of avoiding radiation. It is painless and there are no known side effects.
An MRI scan can help identify if a tumor is benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). An MRI can sometimes identify cancer in organs and whether it has spread, (otherwise known as metastasized), from where it started in other parts of the body.
The actual MRI scan can take between 20 - 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body that is being examined and the number of images required. If some of the images are not clear to the radiologist, the patient may undergo a second scan right away.
For most MRI scans, patients can usually eat a light meal and take their regular medication before having the scan. However certain scans require fasting, please consult with our staff at the time of scheduling your examination for specific eating, drinking and preparation instructions.
It is necessary that you remove objects prior to the exam that may affect the magnetic imaging -such as: Jewelry, Hairpins, Watches, Dentures, Eyeglasses, Earrings, or any other items that may contain metal.
***It is very important that you alert both the Scheduler and the MRI Technologist PRIOR to scheduling or having the exam, if you have any metal in your body, pacemaker, heart defibrillator, insulin pump, implanted pain stimulator, implanted medical devices including shoulder, knee, foot/ankle or hip prosthetics in your body.
